A new hospital chief executive took up the interview hot seat with presenters on a hospital radio show for younger patients on the ward.

Dr George Findlay, who joined Medway NHS Foundation Trust at Medway Maritime Hospital in Gillingham earlier this year, was grilled by youngsters Ellie and Brooke.

The full interview is due to be aired on Sunday afternoon but in a sneak peak released by the volunteer-run station Hospital Radio Medway, Dr Findlay is heard talking about specific issues and topics for youngsters.

He even chose a song to be aired but the track choice has not been revealed and is being kept under wraps.

The girls posed questions about how the hospital looks after children and covered a range of questions including topics on how children are cared for differently to adults, the impact of Covid on the children's ward and the role of radio within the hospital community.

Talking about the different experience for younger patients, Dr Findlay said: "We've got to recognise that coming into hospital as a child has a lot of anxiety around that.

"We have to pay attention to that and the nursing staff support kids to make them comfortable.

"It can be really boring in hospital so we've got to make sure there's ways to make it more interesting to pass the time and that's very different to adults.

"On all our wards we want to make really good environments. It's really important the children's ward is very child-friendly and interesting in much more than an adult ward."

He also took part in the quick-fire challenge title Would You Rather on the Dolphin Beats show, which has been aired since 2019 to provide a child-friendly show for younger patients on Dolphin Ward at the hospital.

Hosts Ellie and Brooke take requests, play the latest hits and talk about issues relating to teens and children.

They also have guests with interviews and music challenges and the show won a Hospital Broadcasting Award in 2020.

Ellie and Brooke, who are both from the Medway Towns, said: “We always try to find interesting things for our Dolphin Beats listeners to hear on the show, and we were really pleased when George said that he would be interviewed by us.

"They were fantastic interviewers and had some challenging questions for me..."

"Our questions can be easily understood for everyone listening in Dolphin ward and the Medway Towns, and it’s going to be unmissable.”

Dr George Findlay said: “It was an honour to be invited on to ‘Dolphin Beats’ to speak to Ellie and Brooke. They were fantastic interviewers and had some challenging questions for me.

"It’s great to see that our younger patients have such enthusiasm for their local hospital.”

The show will be aired on HRM-FM from 12pm to 1pm on Sunday.
