A proposal to relocate Rochester’s coach park to the Esplanade has sparked a wave of protest.

In less than a week, 1,323 people have signed an online petition opposing the development of the riverside recreation area.

The existing depot in Gas House Road has to go to make way for a school as part of the Rochester Riverside regeneration scheme.

The spot, which is home to Rochester Cruising Club, is one option being considered by Medway councillors and planning officers.

It could accommodate up to 40 coaches at peak times. There also fears the grass may have to be paved over.

The idea has angered many, including pensioner Neville Taylor, who lives in Seaford Court overlooking the river.

The 87-year-old retired journalist said: “The whole thing sounds horrendous. When I heard that it might be a possibility, I thought it was a joke.”

Mr Taylor is concerned about the increased traffic it would generate and road safety on the narrow stretch leading up to the junction with Rochester Bridge.

He added: “It could also result in the loss of a children’s play area, and also outdoor groups regularly use it for exercise. It would be a crime to lose that wonderful panoramic view.”

Peter Williams, a retired doctor who lives in Chatham, said: “This is a nice amenity. My wife uses it for keep fit classes regularly. A coach park is not exactly an attractive concept. This is not about NIMBYism. We don’t live there. We should be protecting our green spaces.”

Alan Moss, chairman of the City of Rochester Society, is also opposed to the proposal.

He said: “The question has to be where else to put it. My answer would be to leave it where it is. But the council won’t budge on their regeneration plans.”

Ward councillor Stuart Tranter said he was aware of the proposal but stressed there was no formal planning application in place.

Cllr Tranter said: “Work on a school which is to replace it is due to start in November, so we have to move quickly.

"But I will fight anything that is detrimental. I will be defending our very important green spaces and make the best choice for the community.

"I would make sure any development would enhance the area.”
