A SMUGGLING crackdown at a busy port led to the arrest of three suspected illegal immigrants and the seizure of four cars.

Medway Police, HM Customs and Excise and Medway Council visited Thamesport, on the Isle of Grain, on Tuesday.

They were joined by staff from the Department of Work and Pensions, DVLA and immigration officers.

Three people were arrested on suspicion of trying to illegally enter the country. Two others were highlighted as possible benefit fraudsters.

Four vehicles were seized for not having any insurance and 49 drivers were stopped for traffic offences.

The operation was coordinated by PC Bryan Ward. He said: "Thamesport is one of the busiest ports in the country and our actions have shown we will do everything we can to prevent people from importing illegal goods.
