A supermarket hopes to offer cut-price fuel to its customers.
Asda has applied for planning permission for a fuel station at their superstore in Maidstone Road, Chatham.
The self-service six pump petrol station will be similar to the pumps at the Asda store in Pier, Road Gillingham.
Motorists will only be able to pay for their fuel by card at the pump as there will not be a kiosk.
If the plans are given the go-ahead, the petrol station would be built in the corner of the car park, opposite the recycling area, and 46 car parking spaces will be lost.
The council has received two letters of objection to the plans which raise concerns over extra traffic and potential tailbacks on to the A229, and the number of nearby petrol stations.
However, Cllr Sylvia Griffin, who represents Rochester South and Horsted, the ward Asda Chatham falls in, supports the plans.
She said: “Personally I think it will be a good idea it’s just up the road from me. I drive a car and if it’s going to have low cost fuel it’s a good idea.”
In January Asda slashed its diesel price to 97.7p per litre, the lowest it has been in six years and other supermarkets followed suit.
Speaking at the time, the supermarket’s senior petrol director, Andy Peake, said: “This announcement shows we’re committed to being the driving force behind lowering fuel prices across the UK regardless of where you live.”
