A backpacker who was facing deportation after being injured in a frenzied knife attack which left two people dead has been given a new visa.

Chris Porter, 21, from High Halstow, leapt from the window of an Australian hostel during the attack in August last year, after warning others to barricade themselves in their rooms.

His friend, Mia Ayliffe-Chung, 21, was stabbed to death and another backpacker, Tom Jackson, later died of his injuries.

Mr Porter was threatened with deportation because after the attack, he did not complete the farm work required to extend his visa.

A petition calling for him to be allowed to stay gained more than 800 signatures.

This week, Mr Porter, who used to work at the Red Dog pub in his home village, shared the news he was being allowed to stay.

Posting on Facebook from the Gold Coast, he said: “Couldn’t be any happier! My visa has just been accepted!! Australia now has to deal with me till June 2019.”
