A grandfather is worried for his grandchildren’s safety as cricket balls keep flying into his garden.

Mark Jones lives next to the ground in Christmas Lane, High Halstow, used by the village cricket team.

When he first moved in three years ago, the team played further down the field, but last season was a different story.

The 56-year-old said: “They’ve moved down the field and the balls come over and hit our conservatory windows. They’ve even smashed them in the past.

“We’ve been asking for months for something to be done. I met with them in April where they agreed to put up fences but they still haven’t done it.

“I have two grandchildren who will be out playing in the garden soon. It’s dangerous for them.

“They need to put nets up to protect not just the house but the walkway that runs along the side of the green too.

“Someone is going to get hurt.”

Mr Jones met Tim Munday, chairman of the cricket club, and George Crozer, chairman of High Halstow Parish Council, at the end of April.

Mr Munday said: “Anyone who watches cricket will know, no matter how big your ground is it’s almost impossible to stop the balls.

“At April’s meeting, we agreed to put netting up next to Mr Jones’ garden to stop any further problems. A plan was agreed.

“We are now waiting for permission from the parish council and then Medway Council because of the height of the nets. It will cost around £5,000 and the club hasn’t got that kind of money.

“We don’t want to have arguments with our neighbours. We want to be part of the village and something everyone likes having.”

Mr Jones and Mr Munday have met since and discussed erecting a fence but have yet to agree where the netting should go.
