Police officers launched a search operation following reports of a person in the water last night.

Search boats were seen on the River Medway at St Mary's Island, Chatham, and a helicopter was also spotted flying over the area before it headed towards Gillingham.

Officers confirmed they were called to a possible sighting of a person in the water near the Rochester Bridge at around 6.05pm.

They were joined by fire crews and the HM Coastguard.

The teams carried out a thorough search of the area but no person was found.
