A man accused of murdering a grandfather at his Chatham home has been refused bail.

Paul Campbell made the application at Maidstone Crown Court through his lawyer Alexia Zimbler.

Mr Berry’s body was found on the floor of the kitchen at his flat in Kinross Close, Princes Park, on July 12 last year.

A previous hearing was told the 59-year-old had been “subjected to a substantial assault”.
Mr Berry was in poor health, suffering from liver damage and walking with a stick.

Campbell, of Farley Close, Chatham, was arrested on July 26 and released on bail. He was remanded in custody after he appeared at magistrates’ court.

The 29-year-old, who was not present for the bail hearing, will next appear at Crown Court on July 4 to enter a plea.
