It was like someone giving me the crown jewels and then taking them away again.
That’s how Medway boxing referee Ian John-Lewis describes the feeling of being stopped from taking charge of the biggest fight in the world, due to take place this weekend.
The official was looking forward to travelling to Dusseldorf for the WBC heavyweight title bout between Vitali Klitschko and Juan Carlos Gomez this Saturday when he was told Klitschko’s team had objected and he wouldn’t be taking to the ring after all.
It is because Mr John-Lewis, who lives in Gillingham, was in charge of Gomez’s last two fights and, despite the WBC and British Boxing Board of Control having no problems with it, he will have to watch on TV when the two boxers slug it out for one of the biggest prizes in world sport.
