Pictures of the aftermath of the accident show an ambulance at the scene, with the blue Hyundai on its roof and debris scattered across the road.

Ben Ruddock and his partner Kirsty Holyer live nearby and were woken up by the crash.

“We both ran outside, went over to help the young driver to safety and then called emergency services,” Ben said.

During this time, the road heading eastbound between Moor Park Close and Otterham Quay Lane was shut to traffic.

A spokesman for the force said: “Officers attended and arrested a 16-year-old boy on suspicion of driving without a licence or insurance and taking a vehicle without the owner’s consent.

“He was taken to a local hospital as a precaution. No serious injuries were reported.”

The ambulance service confirmed a patient was assessed and treated at the scene, before heading to Medway Maritime Hospital for further medical treatment.

The teenager was then bailed to return to the police station on Saturday, March 29, pending further investigation.
