A school has defended its uniform policy after a pupil was sent home for wearing red socks.

Luke Smith, 15, was pulled up at the gates of Gillingham’s Brompton Academy in a uniform check.

He was taken into the sports hall and told to pay 30p for new socks or go home to change.

The school, which has a new uniform since opening in September, said it told pupils they must wear black or white socks.

But there is no mention of the rule in guidelines sent to parents.
Luke, of Wyles Street, Gillingham, said: “It seemed so unfair because I didn’t know anything about it. I was with friends so it was really embarrassing.”

His mum Beverley visited the Marlborough Road school – formerly New Brompton College – to complain to principal Judy Rider.

Mrs Smith, said: “His trousers cover his socks even when he’s sitting down so I don’t see how their colour is relevant.

“Everyone has to follow rules and regulations, but this is just bloody-mindedness. The school wants pupils to act like adults, so they should start treating them like grown-ups.”

A Brompton Academy spokesman said: “We provided new uniforms for existing students free of charge and parents and carers were informed of the new uniform expectations before the start of the academic year.

“Luke Smith, who received a free uniform, was spoken to regarding his uniform and was given the opportunity to resolve the issue but decided to go home.

“We pride ourselves in working in partnership with parents and carers and we regret that we were unable on this occasion to resolve the issue with Mrs Smith.”

She added that the school has not received any other complaints.
