The next phase of a project to refurbish Rochester Bridge will start this month.

Work on the deck of the Old Bridge will begin on Monday, June 22, and will cause some disruptions for drivers.

It will be done by FM Conway on behalf of the Rochester Bridge Trust and will include replacing the expansion joints, deck surfacing and enhancing the heritage lighting.

As a result of work being completed the crossing will be brought down to one lane of traffic, while the cycleway and footway will be suspended while work is being done.

Pedestrians will be asked to cross the road to use the re-opened New Bridge footway and cyclists are asked to either continue in the road or dismount and cross on foot.

Vehicle access to Rochester Esplanade is also being limited during works, with some access via Corporation Street.

Drainage works in the area have also been brought forward "to make the most of the closure".

Senior contracts manager at FM Conway, Liam McGoldrick, said: “The disruption caused by the Covid-19 crisis means we have had to review the scope of the refurbishment project, including deferring some work and bringing other elements forward.

“As a result, the original plan to only work on one bridge at a time has had to be dropped, although the current significant reduction in traffic means we believe any disruption should continue to be kept to a minimum.

“We apologise for any inconvenience and hope people will understand that the revisions to the refurbishment programme are being undertaken with the safety of the public and our workers in mind.”
