It is feared that a three-month closure of a busy road will cause chaos.

Medway Council has announced it is shutting the A228 Frindsbury Hill in the Strood-bound direction from the Sans Pareil roundabout from March 11 to June 21.

It is believed it will be shut for the construction of an entrance to the new Maritime Academy School being built off Frindsbury Hill.

The 5.4-mile stretch of road is one of the busiest in the area and Rochester and Strood MP Kelly Tolhurst fears the closure of such a busy road will cause chaos for residents.

“I am deeply troubled and concerned by what is being proposed,” she said.

“This will cause three months of disruption in the busiest part of my constituency. Over recent months residents have faced delays of up to 45 minutes or even an hour getting around town.

“I’m not sure how we will manage in those three months.”

Kelly and Medway councillors are now calling on the council to work with them to come up with a plan that will work for residents.

“Medway Council needs to come up with a better plan so residents are not facing months of misery getting to school, work and appointments,” she said.

“It needs to bring forward a less disruptive and more sensible plan which won’t adversely impact residents going about their business.”

The diversion will take motorists to Wulfere Way, through Hasted Road, Gravesend Road, London Road, Gun Lane and then back to Frindsbury Road.

There are particular concerns after the traffic issues caused by the roadworks on Four Elms Hill last year.

Hoo and High Halstow ward councillor George Crozer said: “Medway Council seems to make a habit of implementing badly planned roadworks and it never learns from its past mistakes.

“Look at the recent fiasco we have just had at Four Elms Hill.”

Medway Council has been contacted for a comment.
