A new CCTV camera is going to be installed in a fly-tipping hotspot.

The mobile camera will be positioned in Fort Street, Rochester, in an effort to deter people from dumping their rubbish.

Cllr Lauren Edwards (Lab) has been working with the council to get the street regularly cleaned over the past few months, and hopes the new equipment will catch the people doing it and bring it to an end.

She said: "I wrote to residents last month and they have been very helpful about reporting it to me and sending the photographic evidence that has helped me build the evidence base for the CCTV.

"Those who contacted me have been grateful that someone has noticed and is taking action."

You can face a fine of up to £50,000 if you are caught fly-tipping. Lauren said: "We've put signs up to try and deter people from doing it.

"People just dump black bin bags near to where the bins are, but they're doing it on days the bins aren't even collected and don't realise it's actually fly-tipping.

"The area has very regular residential and business fly-tipping, so hopefully the new CCTV camera will help bring change to the area."

Dealing with fly-tipping was one of her pledges in the by-election back in December, and she will now be focussing on other hotspots in the area, such as Cossack Street and the surrounding roads.

She said: "I want everyone in Rochester East to live in a nice clean community where fly-tipping is not tolerated.

"Ideally, I would also like Medway Council to bring back community wardens so that we would have highly visible deterrents against fly-tipping and other problems such as littering and graffiti at the local level."
