TV presenter Anneka Rice needs urgent help refurbishing a rescue centre on the Channel 5 revival of her series Challenge Anneka.
The Treasure Hunt star surprised kmfm breakfast presenters Garry Wilson and Chelsea Little at their studio in Medway this morning to appeal for volunteers to help in her new project at animal charity Foal Farm in Biggin Hill.
The programme, which was devised by host Anneka in the 1980s, sees her being given a task to accomplish within a period of two to three days, usually in aid of a charitable cause.
Rice, based in her famous blue buggy, would organise the project by persuading companies and volunteers to contribute time and resources for free.
The programme first ran on BBC One for six series between 1989 and 1995, and ITV ran two special episodes in the early 2000s.
Challenge Anneka has now been revived for a four-part series by Channel 5, with the final episode featuring the host rebuilding an entire set of kennels and creating an outdoor play area at Foal Farm in Biggin Hill over the next two days.
It rescues many animals, including horses, goats, ducks, and chickens, but has a particularly big dog centre, which the show's team are tasked with decking out in a complete refurbishment.
The project is taking place today and tomorrow, with the team hoping to finish by Saturday, when they plan to take a huge group photo with dogs adopted from Foal Farm and their owners.
The celebration, which coincides with the farm's 60th anniversary, will also have a dog show with stalls and competitions.
Anneka is appealing for anyone who wants to help with the refurbishment, or who has adopted a dog from Foal Farm in the past and wants to join the party, to email the team at annekachallenge@gmail.com.
They are in particular need of carpenters and electricians to help out, as well as electric suppliers and any other volunteers who are able to help or provide supplies like dog toys, beds, tools, or paint.
"We will give you such a warm welcome if you can help us, and lots of love," she continued, adding: "It's a sensitive area because we're dealing with rescue dogs, but if you've got a rescue dog and you'd like to be part of this glorious celebration, email us."
The presenter also wants to encourage people to adopt dogs rather than buying them.
She said: "Honestly I didn't know really anything about it, and I have been so moved by what we've seen.
"We've met so many different dogs. There's other dogs there that have seen cruelty in their lives but what is the most touching thing is the way the adoption process is like adopting a human, it goes on for weeks and weeks.
"They're fostered to start with, and that develops into a relationship and they stay in touch with Foal Farm right through the rest of the time the dog is alive.
"There is such supportive care, so if anyone is thinking of adopting, this is a good place to do it through, because the utter care and love has floored me."
Anneka was once again joined by soundman Dave Chapman, who made frequent appearances on-screen in the programme's original run.
The episode will run in 2023, but no further details have been released.
The special episodes of the show included a Boxing Day special in 2006 helping World Vision rebuild a maternity clinic, cricket pavilion, and a play centre in Sri Lanka after the 2004 tsunami.
A second episode in 2007 featured Rice recording an album titled Over The Rainbow to raise money for children's hospices around the UK, which included her surprising McFly onstage at a concert in Cambridge to ask the band to record a single for charity.
