Kevin Watson says his appointment as Chatham’s caretaker-manager has been such a whirlwind that he hasn’t had time to consider whether he would like the job full-time.
The 29-year-old player-coach, pictured, was handed the reins last Thursday after Paul Foley resigned following four straight losses and no wins in 12.
Watson has overseen 3-2 wins in his two games in charge as Chatham gave themselves a slim chance of pulling off a miraculous escape from the Ryman League Division 1 South drop zone with one game remaining.
Watson said: "I was happy to do it when the chairman asked me. It is always something I have been interested in and I have some coaching qualifications but didn’t think the opportunity would come this early.
"I honestly haven’t thought about what will happen after the season’s over. It’s been such a rollercoaster the past week."
Watson revealed he offered his players the chance to quit the club before Saturday’s 3-2 win over Walton Casuals. "I want a culture of commitment here," he said. "All I can ask is that the players put the effort in."
Top-of-the-table Bognor visit Chatham on Saturday and Town will escape the drop if they can defeat the leaders – who need to win to secure the title – by more than one goal and either Corinthian Casuals fail to beat Whitstable or Whyteleafe lose at home to basement boys Horsham YMCA.
