Chatham Town manager Kevin Watson calls on his side to show desire

Chatham can have a big say in the Ryman League, Division 1 North promotion race this weekend.

Saturday's visitors to Maidstone Road, Heybridge, are battling with Witham for the final play-off spot.

Only goal difference separates the two Essex clubs and Chatham boss Kevin Watson (pictured) has called on his players to match Heybridge for desire.

He said: “They’ve got a lot to play for, a lot at stake. Some would think we haven’t but I want players at this club to have the mentality where they want to win everything, at any stage of the season.

“It’s still good to know we can affect things. There’s no personal vendetta against Heybridge but we did it the other season when we stopped Needham winning the league.”

In theory, the pressure is off Chatham but Watson has warned his players they will need to match the visitors physically before they can start to play with any freedom.

He said: “The majority of teams, if there’s a lot at stake, are willing to sacrifice more and games can become quite physical. That means there’s no chance to relax, otherwise we won’t be able to compete. We need to get ourselves up for that."

Matt Solly is suspended this weekend but Watson otherwise has a full squad to pick from.
