Child trapped in swings in Rochester park freed by firefighters

by Jenni Horn

Firefighters freed a teenager who had been trapped in a child’s swing for almost two hours.
The 13-year-old St John Fisher School pupil had squeezed herself into the playground equipment on Sunday afternoon and got stuck.
Friends tried to get her out but after about an hour, persuaded the girl to let them call 999 for help.
A crew from Strood Fire Station arrived at the park in Golding Close, off Pattens Lane in Rochester, at about 3.50pm.
They spent the next 45 minutes dismantling the swing.
A spokesman for the station said: “By the time we arrived a friend had gone home to get some butter but I’m not sure how they thought that was going to help.
“Luckily, to save a bit of the girl’s dignity, we arrived before the butter did.
“The only way we could get her out without hurting her was to dismantle the swing which took some time.
"There was a worry that her circulation would start to be affected so we called an ambulance. The girl was OK but she could easily have suffered worse injuries.
“She could have died of embarrassment though. There was a crowd of about 30 to 40 people watching, all with their camera phones out taking pictures.”
