Veterans from across Kent were treated to an outdoor Christmas party at the Jingle Bell Rock drive-in concert at Fort Amherst, Chatham.

The concert was organised by The Not Forgotten Armed Forces charity and performers entertained more than 100 guests as they watched from their cars.

The Not Forgotten is a British Armed Forces charity which supports serving and ex-service men and women.

Their annual tours aim to boost morale and lift lockdown spirits by reaching veterans across the UK, in September they visited veterans in Tonbridge for a summer concert.

In the Spring, several care homes across Kent saw a garden visit from entertainers, including Pembroke House in Gillingham.

Rosie Thompson, The Not Forgotten, said: “Sadly, as Covid continues to impact our daily lives, we’ve had to put our traditional Christmas parties for veterans on hold.

"But it is a year when we need to do more for those who have really felt the restrictions."

She continued: "So, we’ve improvised, adapted and overcome the obstacles and are bringing some much-needed cheer, fun and entertainment to those that have served our country by offering them some early Christmas celebrations.”

More than 100 veterans and their guests enjoyed a feast of festivities in their social bubbles at the concert.

Many had been struggling with loneliness and isolation, especially with Plan B coming into place and some becoming more hesitant to leave the house.

This concert offered an opportunity to enjoy festive entertainment without leaving their cars and spend time with friends before some face the prospect of Christmas alone.

Bluetooth speakers were provided so that the audience could listen to the music and games on stage.

A professional entertainment team performed popular classics and festive favourites so that veterans could enjoy a sing-a-long and a dance.

They also got involved with interactive games such as ‘singo bingo’ and a number plate raffle.

To complete the Christmas party, veterans and their families enjoyed a hog roast with all the trimmings.

Organisers were keen to ensure veterans felt safe at all times - each vehicle was parked at a specified distance from others, so veterans and their guests could get out of the car if they wished and dance the afternoon away safely.
