Firefighters were called to a bedroom blaze thought to have been started by a discarded cigarette.

Two crews from Strood and Halling answered the 999 call from a pensioner in Wilson Avenue, Rochester, at 6.30pm yesterday.

A spokesman for Kent Fire and Rescue said the fire damaged furniture and resulted in smoke damage to the rest of the room.
