A coach and four cars have crashed on a busy dual carriageway.

The collision on the A289 happened where the B2000 bridge to Cliffe Woods crosses over the Wainscott bypass.

Five vehicles have been smashed after a Centaur coach collided with two cars, crushing them, and pushing them into the paths of two more cars.

None of the drivers sustained any life threatening injuries however the male driver of the Mini was stretchered onto an ambulance wearing a neck brace and taken to Medway Maritime Hospital with head and facial injuries.

Jenny Coxall witnessed the incident and said: "The coach smashed into the back of a KIA which then hit another car, and then another one.

"Then the coach went into the back of a mini.

"The man in the car in front of me seemed to know what he was doing, he helped get the two women in the KIA out of the car through the window.

"They had a few nasty cuts to their faces and the daughter had a lump on her head.

"The man in the Mini had a neck injury and also to a bad bump to the head.

"I just got out the car and took out my blankets to give to the people who were wounded and we tried to clear the area for emergency services to get through.

"People were very good really, there was no hysteria, it was very quiet and calm. Everybody was in shock."

Traffic is still slow up between the A226 junction for Higham and the roundabout connecting Four Elms Hill and Hollywood lane, Wainscott.

Firefighters, air ambulance, SECAmb and police are currently at the scene.

A spokeswoman for Kent Fire and Rescue Service said: "We were called at 8.40am to reports of an incident involving a coach and four cars.

"When we arrived nobody was trapped in their cars, but ambulance crews were dealing with some walking wounded."

One lane was reopened at 9.45pm and a police spokeswoman added: "All breath tests came back negative, none of the drivers were intoxicated."

In a separate incident, two cars crashed in the Medway Tunnel on the Gillingham-bound carriageway at 8.45am.

The scene was cleared by around 10.20am and any injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.
