A convenience store in Rochester High Street could close to make way for another restaurant.

The owners of Castle Food & Wine at 47-49 High Street, next to the Corn Exchange, have submitted a change of use application to Medway Council.

Halpern Properties have also applied to demolish the existing extension, build a new extension and make alterations to the shop front.

The planning statement submitted to Medway Council says almost half of the 166 High Street units are already shops and the loss of an A1 retail use “would be unlikely to be a significant factor”.

It added: “Overall, it is considered the provision of an A3 unit [restaurant] will not only help in diversifying the choice within the High Street but also will support the viability and the vitality of the town centre.”

The application has already received several objections. The shops sells basics such a bread, milk and newspapers as well as other food and alcohol. The only other convenience store is at the opposite end of the High Street.

Marion Jenkins, who lives in Castle Hill, said the shop is a “valuable asset” particularly for the elderly and infirm who find it difficult to get to large supermarkets.

She added: “It is the only genuine supermarket in the High Street.”

Another business owner describes the shop as “vital part of Rochester’s community”.
