Concerned Medway families will confront mobile phone companies face-to-face this week.

Medway's health committee wants to look into the alleged dangers to people caused by the signals and discharges from masts.

The meeting has been set up following a campaign against a 3G mast in Railway Street, Gillingham, next to St Mary’s Primary School, pictured.

Campaigners have been fighting the mast in Railway Street, Gillingham, since Vodafone first applied for permission more than four years ago. Medway Council turned down the application twice, but the decision was overturned by the planning inspectorate and the mast was installed earlier this year.

At a council meeting in August the Lib Dems put forward a motion against the mast which was given full backing by all members. The council agreed on a four-point plan to fight the mast which included a call on the chairman of the health overview and scrutiny committee to investigate the health implications of phone masts.

Robin Cooper, director of regeneration at Medway Council, has since written to Vodafone asking the firm to remove the mast.

The scrutiny committee will meet at Gun Wharf, Chatham, on Thursday at 5pm. Speakers will include Mike Evans, a Gillingham resident who has been campaigning against the mast, representatives from major phone companies and an expert from the Radiation Research Trust. The aim is to look at the council's policies and consider whether they need updating.
