Controversial new charges to park at an out-of-town shopping centre have been drastically revised amid a second delay in implementing them.
The new tariff system at Dockside Outlet Centre in Chatham, which was to have started on Monday, caused an outcry among shoppers with many saying they would not be returning to use the retail and leisure facilities.
The charges were then due to come into force today (Thursday) after the intial delay but now won’t be in operation until next Wednesday (October 4). It’s understood the hold-up is down to software issues.
Chatham Maritime Car Park Ltd, which owns the site, has since eased the fees.
To see a movie at the Odeon cinema, visitors will pay £1.25 for four hours compared to the initial £3.50.
And the free one hour has been extended to one hour and a half.
There’s also more leeway given at Ninja Warrior and Gymfinity, both allowing two hours free while blue badge holders can now apply for two three-hour parking passes free.
Members of PureGym, which has a branch in Leviathan Way, are exempt from the new system, but only if using the gym.
The cost will be £1.25 for one hour 30 minutes to two hours 30 minutes, £2.50 for two hours 30 minutes to three hours 30 minutes and £4 for three hours 30 minutes to four hours 30 minutes.
For more than five hours, it’s £8 and to park overnight will cost £10.
Chatham Maritime said the decision to charge visitors had to be made after a survey revealed more than 200 cars were left overnight by people not using the shops and attractions.
Proceeds will go towards the upkeep and improvements at the site which is near to St Mary’s Island
It is thought they are residents and people working nearby who will now have the option to buy permits that can only be used outside of trading hours.
A number of free passes will be available to employees around the complex under the new staff parking scheme.
