The outstanding achievements of a group of young people will be celebrated at an Oscars-style ceremony.

Medway Council’s director of children’s services Rose Collinson will present members of the Cool Kids’ Club with their awards at Lordswood Leisure Centre on Friday.

Awards up for grabs include best positive contribution and best attendance. A red carpet and Oscar-style statuettes promise to make it a special event.

The Cool Kid’s Club is a forum of around 20 children, aged between eight and 15, from mixed and disadvantaged backgrounds. Six volunteer mentors, aged between 16 and 18, support the group.

The club meets six times a year and the purpose is to provide a mechanism for children, young people to get involved in the development of children’s services in Medway and to ensure that their needs are being met.

Rose Collinson said:“I was delighted to be asked to present these children with awards.

"This is a real celebration of their achievements; their involvement in the club helps boost self esteem.

“The Cool Kids’ Club is about giving children and young people the chance to influence council policies and services that will affect them and their families.

"It also helps to give children in Medway a voice, especially ones who might not otherwise be heard.”

The Cool Kids’ Club has been involved with the design of Medway’s bullying strategy, helped design a competition for the Safeguarding Children logo and has designed its own Gold Star Scheme, which is the basis of these annual awards.
