It could be set to put the rain into Rainham - but plans are afoot to bring a Glastonbury to Medway.

Businessman Andy Weir, from Wigmore, has plans for a £100,000 family-friendly event featuring local bands and a well-known headline act.

The 36-year-old is in talks with Medway Council to secure planning permission - but has already won over more than 3,600 people who have joined a Facebook group supporting the plans.

Andy said: "There is obviously a great deal of demand for this type of event. There is nothing else like it in Medway and I think it would really bring something to the area." Andy has set his sights on Westmoor Farm, in London Road, Rainham, for the gig.

But there have been mixed reactions from businesses and residents living nearby.

One homeowner, who did not want to be named, said: "It's good that someone is organising something like this. But I'm not sure if I want it on my doorstep."

Ian Webb, who runs Westmoor Pets opposite the 22-acre site, said: "Anything that puts the local area on the map is a good thing. I hope it is a success. I'm not worried about the noise - it would only be one day after all."

Andy said: "I have chosen the site, which can hold 3,000 to 5,000 people, because it is not in a very residential area. We would set up the stage so the noise would be directed away from any houses nearby. He has already discussed the plans with Medway Council, Kent Fire and Rescue Service and Kent Police.

Andy, who is the director of a company that provides inflatables for events around the world, now has to draw up detailed plans for the festival before meeting council officials again in November.

He helped to put on a show in Cambridge that attracted chart-topping singer Pixie Lott as the headline act.
