Could the River Medway become an aqua motorway?

The River Medway should become a travel highway.

That's the view of Simon Green, chief executive of the Groundwork charity in Medway.

He made the comment at a meeting of the Medway Renaissance Partnership where he is a board member.

"One of the things that has been very good with the regeneration has been improving the riverside sites, but we don't have a way of crossing the river or going up and down it," he said.

"We have a prestige hotel and the potential for visitors to cut across from Strood by way of the station and the river.

"There are opportunities in Chatham, the castles, St Mary's Island."

Wendy Mesher, from Medway Renaissance, said: "It is a priority in the local transport plan, but the problem is the Environment Agency keep raising conservation issues such as worms and snails and other sensitive matters."

The board is expected to go for a tour of the river to look at the potential for piers and development opportunities later in the summer.
