About 25 firefighters worked through last night to battle a haystack fire more than 100ft wide.
Crews were called just after midnight to farmland in Stoke Road, between Lower Stoke and Allhallows on the Hoo Peninsula.
The crews from Strood, Grain, Hoo and Medway prevented the fire spreading to further haystacks, fields and hedgerows.
Flames were more than 10ft high at its height, and one crew was still on the scene at 9am today.
A water unit and command support unit from Maidstone were also in attendance.
The blaze destroyed six out of seven haystacks which were grouped together in the field, weighing 250 tonnes. Police are treating it as suspicious.
Ian Crouch, crew manager at Medway Fire Station, said: "The smoke could be seen from a long way away. It was hard work but we managed to prevent further spread."
At the same time, firefighters were called to a fire that broke out in the kitchen of a home in Cuckolds Green Road, Lower Stoke, at 2.40am.
The homeowner, who was in his 50s, managed to escape and was treated in hospital for smoke inhalation.
Firefighters from Halling and Thames-side prevented the fire spreading to the rest of the house.
