Two Medway cubs took life-saving action to help a fellow pack member when he fell ill.

Stevie Taylor from Walderslade and Jake Ghinn from Lordswood were on camp with the 17th Medway Cubs at Belchamps Scout Activity Centre in Essex in October, when a friend collapsed in a toilet.

Their quick actions - putting the casualty in the recovery position and raising the alarm - meant potential disaster was averted, and the pair have now been presented with an award.

“They had gone to the toilet to brush their teeth and get themselves ready for bed,” recounted Stevie’s mum Lacey.

“They’d gone as a three, and Stevie and Jake had finished and were waiting outside. All of a sudden they heard a thud. Between them they looked over the toilet and noticed [their friend] was on the floor.

"Jake climbed over to be with him while Stevie ran off back to camp to get the leaders. They made sure there was a pulse and put him in the recovery position while the leaders came.”

The unconscious boy was revived, taken to hospital and later discharged to GP care, and has since recovered.

Stevie and Jake received awards from the district commissioner - praising them for using first aid knowledge in a real medical emergency and potentially saving a life.

“I was really proud of him,” said mum Lacey. “It just makes you realise they are actually listening when they’re being taught - you learn skills and take them forward.

“Stevie didn’t realise what he had done, but I kept saying ‘what you’ve done is amazing.’ When he got the award he realised what he’d done was quite good.”

Jake’s mum Melanie said he was pleased with the award but hadn’t expected it, adding: “He was worried about his friend but they just did their best to help him. They’re both quite mild mannered boys so it was nice they got some recognition for it.

“I think they did really well. I think a lot of adults would panic in that situation.”
