A dad had a lucky escape when his bathroom floor collapsed for the second time in 10 months, leaving a hole through to the flat below.
Clive Topazio was at his sink when he felt the floor give way beneath him at his home in Canterbury Street, Gillingham.
It was less than a year after the same had happened to his daughter – but she had fallen down the gap and been left dangling between the bathroom and the property downstairs.
The latest collapse happened when the 47-year-old returned home from work on Friday, March 10 and decided to have a wash before collecting his children from school.
He was stood by the sink when he felt the floor start to go.
"I thought to myself 'what's going on here?' Next thing I knew I was through the floor," he said.
"I was thinking of having a bath instead of a wash but luckily I didn't as I think that would have gone instead."
Mr Topazio, who rents the one-bedroom flat through Sittingbourne-based Angel Estates, suffered no injuries.
He said the hole was big enough to see through to the flat below.
The wash basin was also left hanging precariously above the void and the collapsed floor also meant a corner bath was torn from the wall.
Similar had happened in August last year, when Mr Topazio had to bash the bathroom door down to rescue his daughter, aged nine at the time, who was stuck with her leg dangling through to the flat below.
The previous collapse created a gap spanning 12 inches but this month's was more than double the size.
Mr Topazio, a construction worker, shares the flat with his two daughters, aged 15 and 10, and his nine-year-old son.
The family were provided with a hotel room for the weekend by Angel Estates while repairs were carried out and were allowed to return by the evening of Sunday, March 12.
But Mr Topazio, who says his children were scared to use the bathroom, is not convinced the job has been done properly.
"According to my landlord it's been signed off but how could that be? It's got a step in it and is just a bit of chipboard.
"There is now a 20 to 30mm divot in the floor by the sink and that [the sink] still hangs loose from the wall.
"I have been told it is going to be fixed but I have been given no indication as to when.
'There will be another hole there, I guarantee it. Maybe not this week or next week but eventually the chipboard will rot away...'
"To me they need to do the whole entire bathroom. The floor is rotting underneath, the boards are too.
"It will take some miracle to get this right.
"There will be another hole there, I guarantee it. Maybe not this week or next week but eventually the chipboard will rot away."
Mr Topazio has made several complaints about mice and damp since moving in more than three years ago and is now asking Medway Council for help to move out.
Angel Estates has been approached for a comment.
