Meanwhile Medway has enjoyed an Olympic coup with the announcement that the Senegal squad is to base itself here for its training camp.
Athletes from the French-speaking West African nation will be at Medway Park, while its football team will use Priestfield stadium if they qualify.
The Senegalese side might also compete in a pre-season friendly against the Gills.
The nation has competed in the Olympics since 1964 and won silver in the men’s 400 metres hurdles in 1988.
Seydina Omar Diagne, of Senegal’s Olympic committee, said: "The people of Medway will make them feel welcome and will hopefully also be their biggest supporters at the Games."
Senegal joins the Barbados paralympians and the Portuguese trampolining squad in training in Medway ahead of next year’s Games.
Robin Cooper, Medway Council’s director of regeneration, community and culture, said: "The calibre of our facilities and our proximity to the Olympic Park makes Medway an ideal training base.
Gillingham FC chairman Paul Scally was delighted.
He said: "We are sure Priestfield Stadium will provide ideal facilities for Senegal’s football preparations.
"We have already talked to them about possibly staging a practice match between the Gills and Senegal.
"Now we just have to keep our fingers crossed that they qualify."
