Police arrived on the scene shortly before 7.30am.

A spokesperson said: “We were called at 7:26 am to a collision involving four cars on the Maidstone-bound carriageway of the A229, near Blue Bell Hill.

“Officers attended the scene where no injuries were reported, and arrangements were made to recover the vehicles.”

The crash caused two miles of congestion back into Chatham, and almost 30 minutes of delays on the London-bound side of the M2.

Arriva posted on social media that the 101 bus service, which travels from Gillingham to Maidstone, was experiencing delays on its way out of Maidstone due to the collision.

Traffic had eased by 9.30am.

There were also lengthy delays on the A2 London-bound after Rochester Bridge due to an earlier accident.

At one point, queues were backed up along City Way in the town and in Station Road and Frindsbury Road in Strood.
