The M2 has now reopened after a serious crash.
A silver car was involved in the smash between junction three, for Chatham, and junction four, for Gillingham, on the coastbound carriageway.
Both lanes of the busy motorway were closed and traffic stretched back for miles, past the exit for Cuxton.
Emergency services including police, ambulance and fire crews were called to the scene at 4.15pm.
Firefighters started to cut the roof off the car to free a man trapped inside by his injuries, but paramedics were able to get the man out safely.
He was passed into the care of paramedics, and his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.
Police advised motorists to use other routes.
Traffic was being diverted off the M2 at junction 3 for Blue Bell Hill, joining the A229 southbound towards Maidstone, then joining the M20 coastbound and exiting at junction 7 and then joining the A249 northbound to rejoin the M2 at junction 5.
Drivers approaching on the M25 from Essex travelling to Maidstone, Ashford, Folkestone and Dover were advised to continue on the M25 to junction 3 to join the M20/A20 coastbound.
Normal traffic conditions were not expected to resume until between 9pm and 9.15pm, but the motorway was fully reopened just before 6pm.
