Delays as London Road and Gun Lane in Strood remain shut for emergency works

Emergency works along two main roads are causing long delays for drivers in a town centre.

Both the A2 London Road and A228 Gun Lane in Strood remain shut following a burst water main.

The repairs are being carried out by teams from Southern Water and UK Power Networks.

Gun Lane is closed in both directions between the High Street and Bryant Road.

London Road is also shut at the junction with Gun Lane due to emergency repairs following a burst water main.

It is believed the two closures are connected with the water shortages over the festive period.

On Friday (January 3), it was reported that final checks were being carried out on a new pipe following the burst, which was underground and had no signs on the surface.

Engineers scrambled to find the source over the last two weeks. All properties and businesses in the area now have running water.

Medway Council posted a warning on social media yesterday to those who are planning on travelling.

It said the works are ongoing and diversions remain in place.

Southern Water has also set up temporary lights along Cuxton Road.

One person commented: “No other traffic is flowing from the other directions, but Cuxton Road traffic is sitting at red lights for no reason.

“Why don’t you cover them over to keep traffic moving? Pathetic!”

According to one.network, the roads have been shut off since Christmas Eve (December 24).

Gun Lane is expected to open on Friday (January 10) and London Road should be accessible by next Monday (January 13).
