Dinosaur-mad Cam Edmonds’ dream was to have a dinosaur sculpture in his garden, and now his wish has come true thanks to the efforts of other young people.

The 16-year-old has Duchenne muscular dystrophy, a rare genetic disorder that causes progressive muscle loss, and he has to use a wheelchair to get around.

Medway Sunlight Rotary Club has been supporting Cam for many years and its latest project was to make his garden wheelchair-accessible, with the help of Medway Youth Trust (MYT).

Cam’s wish list for his garden included a pond, a patio and a couple of trees, with a dinosaur sculpture to remind him of his favourite film, Jurassic Park.

Mum Lisa Edmonds said: “I can’t explain what it means to him, he’s loving it. He’s almost worn out his Jurassic Park DVDs, he has watched them so many times.

“He can go out and get a little fresh air, he has freedom and is independent. It’s absolutely fantastic. He can get right up to the top of the garden.

“Before, all he could do was come around the side of the house and in the back door. He couldn’t access the garden.”

The 9ft dinosaur figure, affectionately called Doris, has been attached to the fence outside Cam’s bedroom window.

Rotarian Bill Parkinson said: “Together we have moved over three skips of soil, installed an accessible path, an artificial lawn and a pond, and are now ready to plant shrubs to brighten it up in the spring.

“The icing on the cake is the magnificent dinosaur that the young people of MYT have made, and the reaction of Cam when he came home from college and saw it standing by the pond. Working with MYT has clearly demonstrated that young people do want to help in their communities.”

Doris was created by staff and young people at Medway Youth Trust, the Medway Messenger’s Charity of the Year, at their base in New Road, Chatham.

On Wednesday, the papier-mache model was loaded on to a trailer and driven to Cam’s home in Dorset Crescent, Gravesend, to surprise him when he arrived home from Hadlow College, where he is studying animal management.

Norma Rice from MYT said: “Different groups of young people supported the project to get Doris ready for painting.

“An incredible dinosaur has been made from help from staff, families, the Princes Trust teams, Medway programmes, Duke of Edinburgh young people and those that access the service. How amazing.”

Cam’s garden was designed by Baylis Landscapes, and created by Medway Sunlight Rotary, MYT, the Artificial Lawn Company, FM Conway, Countryside Properties and Gallaghers.
