A disabled pensioner found dead in his flat after it caught fire died as a result of head injuries, a post-mortem has found.
Alan Wyatt, 68, was found in his ground-floor home at around 10.30am on Valentine's Day by fire crews who had been called to reports of blaze.
Police then descended on Firethorn Close, on The Vineries estate, Gillingham, and sealed off the block.
The cordon remained in place yesterday while forensics teams combed the scene.
Michael Bryant has since appeared in court accused of murder and arson.
The grey-haired 35-year-old was arrested just after midnight last Friday and was remanded in custody following a brief hearing at Maidstone Crown Court.
He was not asked to enter a plea and the case was adjourned until March 20 when he is due to enter pleas. A provisional trial date was fixed for August 5.
Mr Wyatt, an amputee, lived alone and kept himself to himself, according to neighbours.
His brother would regularly visit to bring him supplies.
An inquest into his death has not yet opened as the coroner is awaiting the full post-mortem report.
A neighbour previously told how he watched in shock from his window as the body was removed.
The father, 31, said: "He was wheelchair bound, 68, with one leg, and he lived alone. Unfortunately, his brother discovered him. He was sort of a carer for him.
"He was alive when they had gone out to go shopping for him.
"I didn't know him personally but he would always sit out in the morning with a cup of tea in his wheelchair. He was a quiet bloke."
