Parking meter installed at Riverside Country Park in Gillingham

A decision to install a parking meter at a country park has been labelled “disgraceful” by those who use it.

Parking charges at Riverside Country Park in Gillingham and Capstone Country Park in Chatham are expected to be introduced later this year.

The decision was made at Medway Council’s budget meeting in February.

Drivers will be charged £2.50 per day for vehicles, while coaches will cost £9 a day.

Frequent visitors will be able to buy an annual season ticket for £60 and blue badge holders will be able to stay for free.

This week, several people spotted the recently installed parking meter at Riverside Country Park, sparking outrage.

Lorraine Gower said: “You can’t go for a walk now by the river without paying for it.

“Disgusting paying for something that has been free for everyone to enjoy for years and years.”

Another person added: “Disgraceful decision. Completely lacking in any empathy for the local community.”

Medway Council says the funding raised from the parking fees at the country parks could be reinvested back into Medway’s parks and green spaces.

It says it will also provide a “valuable new income stream” to help address budget challenges.

There is no confirmed date for when the parking charges will start.
