A dog who suffered horrendous head injuries in an axe attack is being nursed back to health by her new foster brother, one of Britain’s biggest dogs.

Last week we told you about Kurt, a massive Anatolian shepherd who lives with Tracy Buckingham, 42, in Chatham.

On four legs, from paws to shoulder, four-year-old Kurt stands at 3ft and on his hind legs, he is more than 7ft. He weighs 11st (70kg).

According to Miss Buckingham, who runs a pet-nanny service and Kangal and Anatolian Rescue And Support (KARAS), Kurt, who was rescued by her as a stray, is the biggest cuddle monster in the world.

What we didn’t reveal is he is nursing four-year-old Celina, who was seriously injured a few months ago when she was brutally attacked with an axe in Bosnia.

Her wounds have now healed but her emotional scars are taking longer.

It is the first time KARAS has taken in a dog from aboard but when volunteers heard about her plight, they decided to help.

Kurt has become a foster brother to Celina, a Kangal, and will be looked after by Miss Buckingham until a new owner can be found for her.

She has settled into her foster home and happily lives with her cats, Kurt and Miss Buckingham’s other dog, Kara.

Her ordeal means she is wary of new situations. She is recovering slowly and has met lots of other dogs out on her walks with Kurt but shows no interest in them at all.

Miss Buckingham said: “She doesn’t want to be friends or play nor does she react or show any aggression.

“She has met lots of children and adults but would rather not stop for a fuss and she is very wary of any sudden movements and often cowers away.”

Introductions to new people need to be done slowly and on her terms to allow Celina to build up her confidence, but while out walking with Kurt she comes alive.

However, once over her nerves, Celina is very affectionate and loves being groomed.

Miss Buckingham said: “She has so much love to give and just adores to be stroked and fussed by those she trusts.”
