A dog was rescued from a disused pit as Coastguard teams sprung into action during the firefighters' strike.

As well as their usual river rescues, a team of 12 from Medway also saved the small terrier after it plunged halfway down a disused pit just after 1.15pm on Saturday.

The crew also helped two people onboard a hovercraft in the River Medway which suffered engine failure.

The team, along with Sheerness RNLI, delivered the men ashore and towed the hovercraft into Sheerness Harbour after being called at 10am.

At 1pm that day, a 50-year-old woman with a knee injury on the vessel Kennon was brought safely to shore at Gillingham Marina.

Then on Sunday, at just before 9am, the Medway Coastguard investigated a report that an 18ft vessel had broken its moorings at Rochester.

The vessel was secured and the owners made aware of the situation.

At 9.15am the team also assisted the motor vessel Overdraft which had run out of fuel and gone aground just south of the M2 bridge at Cuxton.

The vessel was later safely refloated and returned to its mooring.
