Dramatic photos show a car engulfed in flames on a busy dual carriageway during rush-hour.
Fire crews were called to the Chatham-bound A229, just beyond the top of Blue Bell Hill, near Asda.
Traffic was brought to a halt by the blaze which happened at 4.23pm yesterday (Monday).
Drivers faced lengthy delays as firefighters went to work.
A fire service spokesman said: "A firefighter wearing breathing apparatus put out the fire using a high-pressure hose reel.
"The vehicle was severely damaged by the flames with around 60% of it destroyed."
The cause of the fire was thought to be accidental and no one was hurt, the spokesman added.
Heidi Brett, a motorist who was passing by the area, said: "I was on my way to work and got to the traffic lights outside Asda, and saw a grey BMW on fire.
"I saw two police cars and an ambulance were already there.
"When I was going down Blue Bell Hill I saw the fire engine going up towards the car on fire, but trying to get through the queues of traffic that were already growing."
Firefighting operations were complete at 4.51pm.
