A motorist who drove into a McDonald's drive-thru after drinking was arrested after a quick-thinking staff member told him to pull up and wait for his order - but instead called the police while preparing his food.

Marcus Wilson, 28, had been driving a Volkswagen Fox when he pulled into the Medway City Estate drive-thru in Strood, to order some food at about 3am on August 13.

The staff member who served him thought he was inebriated and asked him to pull over to a waiting bay for his order as it was not ready. Instead they called the police to inform them he may have been a drink-driver.

However, while he was waiting for his order, Wilson, of Gerald Avenue, Chatham, was spotted swapping seats with his passenger and this was also captured on the McDonald's CCTV cameras.

When the police arrived a short time later Wilson became aggressive towards officers who arrested him.

During interviews Wilson said he he no comment but was later charged with driving whilst unfit through drink.

He appeared at Medway Magistrates' Court last week, when he pleaded guilty to the charge.

Lewis Aldous, prosecuting, said: "When officers spoke to the defendant he was verbally aggressive and refused to acknowledge he was being arrested but officers got him in the van."

Mr Aldous also told the court Wilson had no previous convictions.

District Judge Stephen Leake fined Wilson £250 and banned him from driving for 12 months and also ordered him to pay £85 costs and a £100 victim surcharge.

Judge Leake added: "It's regretful to see someone convicted for the first time."
