The partner of a motorist who had a lucky escape after a lorry pulled out in front of him causing his vehicle to swerve and crash into a barrier, has revealed her father came to his rescue at the side of the road at took him to hospital.
Kelly Eaves’ partner was driving home from work on the coast-bound carriageway of the M2 yesterday afternoon, when a lorry pulled into the lane in front of him causing him to swerve and crash.
Initial reports from other motorists at the scene was that the driver had been picked up by another motorist who had stopped close by and the pair left the scene.
The crash happened at about 3.40pm between junction 2 for Cuxton and Strood and junction 3, the Chatham turn-off.
Luckily, Miss Eaves’ father had been travelling on the same road just minutes later and saw the crash and recognised the car as belonging to his daughter and her partner and stopped.
He was worried Miss Eaves’ partner had been seriously injured in the crash as his vehicle, a Land Rover Discovery, had rolled across the carriageway several times, he took his straight to hospital to get him checked over and called the police on the way.
Firefighters, police and ambulance crews were called to the scene to deal with tailbacks which quickly built up but it is understood traffic was stopped for a short while until it was discovered no one was trapped in the vehicle.
Another motorist, Suki Jassal said he was the first to stop at the scene of the accident and was able to take these photos afterwards.
He said: “The Land Rover rolled three to four times from the second lane to the embankment after a truck pulled out in front of him from lane one.
“It was very scary and I was convinced the occupant of the car had died. He was so lucky to get out like he did.”
Kelly Eaves, added: “My fiancé that was driving the Discovery home from work when a lorry pulled into the lane in front of him causing him to swerve and crash.
“By pure coincidence my father was driving home from work saw the accident recognised the car to be ours so stopped as any family member would as he was gravely concerned for my partner’s welfare.”
Ms Eaves, dad stopped and took her fiancé to A&E where doctors said he was lucky to walk away from the crash without serious injury.
Miss Eaves, added: “Both of them were understandably in shock and my father just wanted to get my partner to hospital as my partner had got out of the car.
“They both telephoned the police to inform them of the accident whilst at the scene and told them they were on the way to the hospital.
"The police met us at the hospital where my partner was checked over and in the words of doctors and nurses was very lucky to walk away from such an accident.
“The policeman that attended was very understanding as to why my father had taken my partner and left the car as it wasn’t blocking any carriages no other persons was involved they just wanted to get to hospital as soon as they could and with my partner being in visable shock they took what they thought was the best cause of action.”
A spokesman for police added: “Kent Police was called at 3.34pm following a report that a car had overturned and collided with a barrier on the M2.
“The driver has since contacted police to report the incident and inform that he has been picked up and taken to hospital by a relative.”
