An alcoholic dialled 999 more than 20 times to update police on an alleged assault he had reported.

Darren McGimpsey, 31, was told to call officers on a non-emergency number but he refused saying he had no credit on his mobile phone.

McGimpsey, of Hughes Drive, Wainscott, began calling at about 10.15pm on May 15, and after six calls, police visited him to tell him he must stop but he made a further 15 calls.

Police arrested him and he admitted making the calls and apologised. He said he was drunk and had trouble remembering what he had done.

McGimpsey was charged with persistently making use of public communication network to cause annoyance or inconvenience.

He pleaded guilty at Medway magistrates and also admitted breaching a 12-month conditional discharge he’d been given in April for another offence.

Sentencing was adjourned until July 26 .
