ROCK bottom ice hockey side Haringey Greyhounds are the Invicta Dynamos' sole opponents this weekend in the English National Premier League. Sunday's game at Gillingham Ice Bowl will see Invicta go into the game as huge favourites but the Greyhounds mustn't be underestimated after an upturn in their performances.
Last Sunday, for the second week running, the Hounds put the fear in to a professional ice hockey team when they entertained the Solihull Barons and ran the current league leaders close, eventually losing out 8-6.
Haringey team manger Harvey Wroe said: "With less than three minutes to go we were drawing against a team with a large number of paid professionals, and for the most of the game we were in the driving seat. The mood in the dressing room is very upbeat and despite having only one win this season everyone is enjoying their hockey."
And the week before a magnificent Merv Priest hat-trick in the space of three third period minutes saved the blushes of Swindon Lynx who won 5-2. New signing and former Dynamo Nick Burton scored both Haringey goals. The Greyhounds also have a new man between the pipes after Damien Orr left to become the number two at the Isle of Wight Raiders. With Rob Sheldrake out for the season following a car accident Tom Wills has stepped in and against the Barons he faced 63 shots.
Haringey can also call upon the services of Nathan Lawrence who has been acting as number two for the London Knights but it's Wills who has been getting all the plaudits for his unorthodox but flamboyant netminding style.
But Mos team manger Andy Mason isn't phased. He said: "Haringey's results in recent weeks is the warning we need that we cannot allow complacency to set in after doing the hard work in Swindon last weekend. This should be a guaranteed two points for us but any team that can put six past Solihull should not be underestimated."
