Elderly couple from Chatham killed in crash in Lincolnshire

An elderly couple from Chatham have been killed in a crash on the A1 in the East Midlands.

Norman and June Searles, of Concord Avenue, Chatham, died at the scene of the accident on Sunday. Four other people were also injured in the smash.

The collision happened at about 4.30pm on the southbound carriageway between South Witham and Stretton and involved a black Vauxhall Vectra and a red Rover 400.

The Rover was travelling southbound towards Stamford. The Vectra was travelling north on the northbound carriageway before the crash.

Norman, 79, was driving the Rover and June, 77, was a passenger.

Another female passenger in the Rover taken to Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham, where her condition has been described as stable.

A male passenger in the Rover was taken to University Hospital of Coventry and Warwickshire, where he remains in a stable condition.

The female driver of the Vectra was taken to the Queen’s Medical Centre with minor injuries and has since been discharged.

The male passenger in the Vectra was taken to Peterborough District Hospital and was discharged after treatment.

The road remained closed until 11.30pm.

Police are investigating and appealing for witnesses to come forward.
