Elderly couple's lucky escape from garage collapse

An elderly couple escaped serious injury after their garage partially collapsed when the car they were in accidentally hit it.

The couple, who have not been named, were taken to hospital suffering from only minor injuries after the incident which happened in Bader Crescent in Wayfield, Chatham, on Thursday.

It is thought the elderly man who was at the wheel accidentally hit the timber-framed structure which partially collapsed on their vehicle with them still inside.

The emergency services including firefighters were sent to the scene at about 10am to help free the couple.

A spokesman for Kent Fire and Rescue Service, said: "We were called out to help stabilise the structure, once we had done that we were able to work in the space around the car to help the pair get out.

"Both were able to get out of the car with assistance from paramedics and walked to the ambulance.

"It is thought the man have may have suffered suspected back injuries during the collision.

"We then made sure the structure was safe before leaving, we were there for nearly an hour in all."
