An elderly man fell prey to thieves after letting a conman who claimed to be a workman into his home.
The alleged burglary took place in Barnsole Road, Gillingham, on Tuesday around midday.
An 87-year-old resident answered the door to a man who said he was from Southern Water to inspect drainage pipes.
The victim was aware that routine checks by the water company were ongoing in the area and so allowed the man to walk through his home and into the back garden, where they remained for approximately 20 minutes.
When they came back inside, the victim noticed his front door was ajar.
The suspect left, claiming he was parked on double yellow lines, and the victim went upstairs to find items taken including a diamond ring, a gold watch, a George V sovereign coin and £40 in notes.
The suspect is described as white, around 40, 6ft, with a stocky build, short dark hair and a northern accent. He was wearing a blue suit, black shoes, a white shirt and a blue tie. It is believed he was operating along with someone else.
Investigating officer, DC Murray Tester, said: “This sort of crime can be very distressing to the victims, who have had their trust violated.
“I’d like to remind all residents to be on their guard against anybody coming to their door unexpectedly. Always ask for identification if the person claims to be from an official company or body, and if you are still unsure, leave them outside while you call the company and check – no one from a legitimate company will mind.”
Anyone who saw the man or has any information about him or the crime should contact Kent Police on 101, quoting crime reference XY/12388/13, or by contacting Kent Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
Southern Water has also issued a warning to customers reminding them to check for identification, should anyone knock on their door, and to call Southern Water to check their credentials on 0333 3211559.
