An elderly woman has died in a house fire in Chatham.

Firefighters were called to Chestnut Aveune, Walderslade just before 10.10pm Thursday.

Two crews from Medway and one from Chatham were sent to the scene after a neighbour raised the alarm.

The victim is thought to have been in her nineties.

Fire investigation teams will be working alongside Medway Police officers to determine the cause of the blaze - but it is not being treated as suspicious.

Steve Griffiths, assistant director for community safety at Kent Fire and Rescue, said: "Firefighters did everything they possibly could but despite crews best efforts an elderly woman died at the scene.

"Our sympathies are with the family, neighbours and local communities who have no doubt been left shocked by what has happened."
