Emergency services called to River Medway near Strood Retail Park and Morrisons after car gets stuck in mud

A huge emergency service response was triggered after a woman in her car got stuck in the mud and had to be hoisted out.

Police, paramedics, the coastguard and fire crews were all called to the River Medway, near Strood Retail Park and Morrisons, at around 11am today (December 6).

A spokeswoman for the ambulance service said it was called to reports a vehicle had left the road when it became stuck in the mud.

Pictures taken from the scene earlier showed a blue car on its side on the riverbank as firefighters lowered a ladder down to help the car's occupant.

The woman was helped to safety by the emergency crews and was treated at the scene by paramedics.

Police patrols and coastguard rescue teams from Medway and Sheppey were in attendance to assist the fire and rescue service.

Three fire engines, a water safety unit and a height vehicle were also at the scene.

The vehicle has now been recovered from the riverbank.

Pictures from the scene this afternoon show the car being hoisted from the water by firefighters.
