It’s time to dig out your shorts and sunglasses – Medway is set to sizzle in temperatures higher than Barcelona this weekend.
With the barometer predicted to reach 22C, Josh Flores chose 10 things to do on a sunny day in Medway;
Rochester Castle Gardens
The tallest castle keep in England was strategically built on the bank of the River Medway.
Couple that with lovely gardens and you have a beautiful place to spend a sunny afternoon.
Opening times from April to September is between 10am and 6pm. Ticket prices are £4 for children, £6.40 for adults and £16.80 for a family ticket. Entry to the grounds is free.
A great place for exercise, picnics or just basking in the sun for a few hours, Riverside Country Park is a delightful place for a sunny day.
It covers 100 hectares in Gillingham and contains a variety of habitats.
There is a visitor centre, cafe, toilets, a children’s play area and a free parking.
Capstone Farm Country Park
Another country park and another place to enjoy fresh air and nature.
Take a stroll around the lake in the sunshine and maybe enjoy an ice cream from the cafe as you go.
Boat tours
For those looking for a more action-packed time, Jetstream Tours offers the perfect way to explore Medway.
The crew tells you Medway’s history from a very different perspective as the boat speeds along the river.
Tours start at Sun Pier in Chatham and goes all the way to the Second World War forts on Hoo Island.
The Strand, Gillingham
The open air pool is always a big attraction here but that doesn’t open until May 28.
However, the leisure park provides visitors with a large selection of outdoor activities. These include swimming, tennis, golf, children’s play areas, netball, basketball, football plus the miniature railway.
A cafeteria and free parking are also available.
Medway Horticultural Festival
It’s a perfect time to be thinking about the garden so head for Cozenton Park which is hosting the Medway Horticultural Festival.
Between 10am and 5pm tomorrow and Sunday, you can get advice from the plant doctor, watch demonstrations from the forestry team, and find plants to make sure your garden and hanging baskets look lovely.
The festival is held in conjunction with Hadlow College, which has a base at the park. Free entry.
Village visit
Tucked away down a cobbled street is Upnor Castle, an historic Medway gem.
Children can explore the Elizabethan artillery fort which was designed to protect warships.
You can also enjoy the views and a picnic in the grounds and there is the added bonus of free parking.
Pub gardens
Always a popular choice for a chilled out pint, glass of wine or soft drink as the temperature rises.
You could sit by the river at the Command House in Chatham, sip your drink in the shadow of Rochester Castle at Ye Arrow or maybe head for the outdoor seating areas at The Ship or The Pier in Lower Upnor.
Allhallows Beach
This list wouldn’t be complete without a beach.
Having been cleaned up only a few years ago, it is now a great spot to lie down and pretend that Medway really is the Mediterranean.
Anyone for tennis?
It’s the perfect summer sport, particularly in the good weather so why not think about taking up tennis this year?
You could try Frindsbury Tennis Club at Upnor where membership is made up of players of all ages and abilities and new members are always welcome.
